Hopi, launched by Boyner Group in 2015, is a loyalty app that offers a personalized shopping experience using big data. It cooperates with brands from clothing to technology; from travel to food in many different sectors. It delivers campaigns suitable for its users, lifestyles, tastes, and needs, and enhances the shopping experience as it is used. Hopi processes 15M real-time data on a daily basis, has 65 TB data size, 8500 beacons, 40 different data sources, 16.5K + POS.
HOPI and KARTACA
Hopi and Kartaca have been business partners since day zero. Kartaca was the software company that did the primary analysis and developed the Hopi app from scratch, and today continues the development, day-to-day operations, and maintenance of the app working closely with the Hopi team.
HOPI’S TECH CHALLENGES
Hopi systems need to be up and running 24/7 without interruptions and should handle high traffic during peak times, high seasons and flash sales periods such as 11.11 and Black Friday. Besides, Hopi needs to collect and process huge amounts of data for 7.5M + users from several resources to offer the most suitable and personalized selection of products to its customers.
HOPI’S PREVIOUS INFRASTRUCTURE AND THE NEED TO EXPLORE OTHER OPTIONS
It was time for the renewal of Hopi’s existing infrastructure investment. At the same time, Hopi needed a more flexible and modern infrastructure. The previous infrastructure provider had hours of outages last year and returned as a loss of business. High availability was crucial for them as Hopi is a system that should work 24×7. It led them to seek a cloud alternative.
WHY THEY CHOSE GOOGLE CLOUD
Kartaca helped Hopi to make an objective comparison among major cloud suppliers. After an extensive analysis with Kartaca, they decided to eliminate the alternatives and go forward with Google Cloud. The analysis was made comparing several aspects of major cloud providers. They have chosen Google Cloud because of the investments made by Google Cloud, the availability and support of next-generation technologies for next-generation companies, the reduction of operation and trained human costs, speed, scalability, and high availability.
After the preparation, 200 VM, 7.5M + user big data, and Hopi application infrastructure moved to Google Cloud concurrently within 5 hours. Besides, the entire system has been modernized to run on the Google Kubernetes Engine and upgraded to container architecture.
“We can compare our migration to an automobile factory that is both moved overnight and switched to robot technology. Plus, even the next morning, after switching to robot technology; production should not be interrupted and should continue in the same way. We planned and realized the whole process together with Kartaca.”
says Murat Taşbaş, Hopi IT Director
Hopi reached a robust, modern, flexible and highly available infrastructure after the migration. They now have less operational costs, less investment, more flexible architecture, and more creative thinking. Besides, they are more confident about realizing their future projects that rely heavily on big data operations.
